MRI for Procedures

Medical imaging to guide minimally invasive procedures

Español

What is an MRI?

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a type of medical imaging. It uses a strong magnet and radiofrequency waves to give clinicians a 3 dimensional look inside the body. This can help them diagnose problems.

Clinicians can also use MRI to guide minimally invasive procedures. These procedures can be an alternative to surgery because they have lower risks and shorter recovery times.

What are the risks of MRI?

MRI is generally safe when done by a specialist. MRI does not expose you to radiation like an X-ray or CT scan.

During an MRI, some metals can heat up or move within the body. You will be asked a series of screening questions before your MRI to make sure it is safe for you. Be sure to answer these questions accurately.

MRI scans make loud noises, so you will wear ear plugs. The MRI requires you to lay still for an extended period of time, which can be uncomfortable.  It often requires part of the body to be inside the machine, which is shaped like a tube. This closed space can cause some people to get nervous, especially if they experience claustrophobia. If this happens to you, tell your clinician so they can give you medicine to help. Very rarely, MRI can cause body tissue to heat up without any metal. You will be watched during the MRI. Let your care team know if you experience any discomfort.

What are the alternatives to MRI?

Different types of medical imaging can be used to guide procedures. Like MRI, ultrasound does not use radiation. Fluoroscopy and CT use radiation. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Your clinician will choose the type of imaging that allows them to see clearly and perform the procedure safely.

You may also choose not to have the MRI-guided procedure. Your alternatives depend on your preferences, overall health, and the reason why your clinician is recommending this procedure.
